Аннотация: A century and more ago the ships crossing the
Atlantic westward were crowded with immigrants from Europe seeking
a way of life denied to them in their homeland. They fanned out
over a vast continent to find a piece of land on which to settle,
build a home, find a spouse and start a family. Using their native
talents and energy and motivated by an intense desire to better
their lives they created a great nation. They were attracted by the
magnetic pull of dream of a richer life but the primary impelling
force was, as sociologist Robert Lynd described it, centrifugal.
They were for the most part thrown off or driven away from the
conditions - political, social, economic, religious, physical -
prevailing in 19th and early 20th century Europe.
